Joshua Mast who is from Florida, married Stephanie and attended the Liberty University, an evangelical Christian college located at Lynchburg, Virginia.
He graduated in 2008 and got his law degree there in 2014.
In 2019, they were living with their sons in Palmyra, a small rural Virginia town, when Joshua Mast was sent on a temporary assignment to Afghanistan.
Mast, then a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a military lawyer for the federal Center for Law and Military Operations.
